Here at MVP Therapy, we treat patients as individuals, not just a set of physical symptoms. Our therapists are highly trained, capable, and compassionate, partnering with patients to tailor therapy that not only restores function but also returns them to their way of life.

If you are experiencing joint pain, weakness, or balance issues, which create difficulty completing your daily tasks or sport, then you can benefit from an evaluation by a PT. Other reasons for PT are wanting to get stronger prior to, or after surgery. If you are still not sure if it’s right for you, we offer free 15-minute consultations with at PT to clarify whether PT is appropriate for you, and to make sure our clinic is the right fit for you.
-
When you have completed your course of PT, your team will walk you through a customized care plan to continue at home to maintain your success, or even exceed your goals.
-
We focus on you: your issues, what we think will help your condition, and then teach you in ways that fit your learning style and lifestyle. Whether an All-Star athlete or someone who is sedentary and never exercised, there are programs here for each! Treatment plans can focus on education, strength and stretching, the use of specialized PT equipment, and/or hands on therapy. Whatever the plan is, your PT team will guide and teach you.

The short answer is as little as needed, but as much as necessary. Our criteria to be done with PT is that either your goals are met, or you have gained the ability to self manage your condition/symptoms. This is unique to each patient and their condition, needs, and goals. The average patient is seen in PT 2x/ week, however, this changes with the needs of the patient. Visits are typically more frequent in the beginning of care, and less frequent as your condition improves. Your expected time frame will be discussed on your first day during your one on one evaluation with your PT and may change based on your progress. On average, appointments last 45 minutes to one hour.

We encourage you to dress in comfortable clothing that you can easily move around in. You might consider making your area of injury easily accessible (for a knee injury you could wear shorts or loose-fitting pants). We do offer a private area where you can change your clothing if needed.
-
Our goal is to reduce your pain levels as much and as quickly as possible. Some discomfort is to be expected as you work to build strength and regain range of motion, however, you and your team will communicate and work together to make sure any discomfort is within a tolerable range for you. We also use modalities to reduce and manage pain. This could include ice or hotpacks, ultrasound, electrical stimulation (TENS), massage, dry needling, etc.
-
While we have ways to measure your objective progress, you will be the one to know if and how much the PT is helping. We measure progress with questionnaires, range of motion and strength testing, and consistent check-ins with your care team. If there is no change within the first 1-2 weeks, we will many times adjust your program, or take a different approach. Of course, this requires you to do your part and take our advice, do the suggested home exercises, and attend PT to make important adjustments to your program.
-
To get the most out of PT and achieve the best outcomes, it is recommended that every patient complete their personalized home exercise program. These handful of exercises are most often performed every day in order to regain range of motion, increase strength, or improve balance in order to meet your goals. Doing these exercises can help your PTs best make decisions for your program as far as tolerance, and make sure you are getting the most out of the PT experience.
-
Although there is some inherent risk with any physical activity a person engages in, every clinician on our team is a licensed health professional, trained to prescribe exercises that are safe for you and your condition to perform, as well as continuously assess if you are tolerating the activity well. If you have concerns about any particular activity, please discuss this with your therapist.
-
Your past injuries and medical conditions are always taken into account when developing a treatment plan that is right for you. This may indicate that a more gentle or aggressive approach is appropriate for you, or that a longer recovery time is expected. This will be discussed during your initial evaluation with your PT, as well as throughout the course of your program. We ask a lot of questions, but if we have not asked something in particular, please ask us about it!
-
These kinds of changes are not all required as part of coming to PT, however, if you have specific questions or if there are changes that can be made to improve your recovery in a timelier or healthful way, your provider will discuss these with you. In some cases, how you may have always done something could be contributing to why your condition exists, in which case, altering it would be beneficial.

No! The vast majority of the time you do not need a doctor’s prescription. However, if you are being seen by a physician for the same issue, or with certain insurances, we will need approval of your PT plan from that doctor. We will conveniently handle that for you; and will communicate our findings to whomever you wish.

MVP’s PTs and PTAs are licensed by the State of Virginia Department of Health. Physical therapists have earned either Master’s or Doctorate degrees in Physical Therapy. They are experienced in treating a wide range of conditions. Some are certified in adjunct services like dry needling for pain management. Physical Therapist Assistants, or PTAs, all have associate’s degrees from accredited institutions. PTAs are able to carry out all treatments the PT prescribes and make changes to the programs as needed.
